EUGÉNIE (1826-1920) Imperatrice, femme de Napoleon III. - Lot 673
EUGÉNIE (1826-1920) Imperatrice, femme de Napoleon III. 2 L.A.S. "E" and "Eugénie", Camden Place, Chislehurst September-December 1879, to Jean-Baptiste FRANCESCHINI-PIETRI, Paris; 10 pages in-8, envelopes (mourning). Letters to the former private secretary of Napoleon III, concerning the painting by Protais depicting the Imperial Prince, killed by the Zulus in June 1879. 1 September. She first alludes to a polemic in Le Gaulois on a question that is "so close to her heart. The painting of PROTAIS [The Dead Prince] unfortunately is likely to upset me never I would have the courage to look at it that did not he did the fight? But this whole affair was done in reverse, it was 1° a simple drawing to be engraved and kept in the prayer books and not a painting that we have constantly in front of us! Little by little things have changed and I am afraid that despite all the poetry, I lack the courage "... 16 December. She asks for precise information on the plans of the chapel, and the portrait of the Emperor by Mr. André. She wants Franceschini-Pietri to see Protais: "I would like to know what I owe him for his painting which I would like to call the Field of Rest, because he has above all been able to restore a calm which I can only find in front of this painting !! and to know from him if he thinks he can do the other one I asked him to do "... She wouldn't mind if he exhibited it at the Salon. "The uniform is on its way, we wanted to send it to the tailor's to get it ready... I promised not to see it so that it could be returned to me intact, because it would be a desecration to touch it! I was promised not to send it there. However painful the visit to Paris may have been for me, it would have been almost impossible under the conditions she was presented to refuse! It is the continuation of this fatality that pursues me. I would have liked to have arrived in time to close my mother's eyes "... A group of 10 L.A.S. of painters is joined to Franceschini-Pietri. Eugène FROMENTIN (3). 6 August [1869]
