GAULLE Charles de (1890-1970) general, President de la Republique.
P.S. "C. de Gaulle", Algiers 7 August 1944; 1 page in-4 partly typed, heading Provisional Government of the French Republic, Presidency. Mission order. Order given to Mr. LUIZET and Mr. CLOSON "to go to France by the first landing operation, as a matter of absolute priority; before any agent, officer, or delegate". Chares LUIZET (1903-1947), prefect of Corsica, the first department to be liberated since 1943, had just been appointed Prefect of Police of Paris. Francis-Louis CLOSON (1910-1998) was appointed future Commissioner of the Republic for the North. [They were to be dropped off in a maquis in the Ambérieu region, but their plane could not land and dropped them off in Corsica. It is only on the third attempt that Luizet and Closon will be deposited in a maquis in Vaucluse on August 10th. From there, they will reach Avignon, then Lyon, and finally Paris on August 17].
