KRAUS Karl (1874-1936) ecrivain et pamphletaire autrichien. - Lot 729
KRAUS Karl (1874-1936) ecrivain et pamphletaire autrichien. AUTHORIZED MANUSCRIPT, Eine prinzipielle Erklärung [A Statement of Principle], [November 1917]; 9.5 pages in-8 (with 3 press clippings inserted) of 10 in-8 ff. glued to the spine of proof sheets; in German. Manuscript of a vigorously anti-militaristic and pacifist conference. Kraus read this speech in Vienna on November 11 and 18, 1917, and again on June 7, 1918, but did not publish it in his journal Die Fackel (The Torch) until October 15, 1918, no doubt because of censorship (Die Fackel, 20th year, nos. 484-498, pp. 232-240); he collected it in 1919 in the first volume of his Weltgericht. In it he expresses his disagreement with the Austrian Foreign Minister Count Ottokar CZERNIN (1872-1932), who, after having called for international disarmament and started peace negotiations, did not exclude the continuation of the war; this was the meaning of Czernin's speech in Budapest on 2 October 1917; Kraus fervently approves the pacifist part of the speech, but rejects the political part which does not exclude the continuation of the war. The manuscript, in a small and fine nervous handwriting in black ink, has erasures and corrections. Kraus inserted two press clippings. He glued the pages of his manuscript to the back of proofs of poems for his magazine Die Fackel. We will quote the beginning, where Kraus expresses his hope for a lasting peace, and his pride that this idea was born in Austria. This peace should restore human dignity in the face of the nightmare of militarism; for once, the Idea would replace the Sword; and Kant's ideas will better secure the future of mankind than Krupp's canons..." I would like to congratulate the rapporteur on his excellent report on the European Union's work in the field of agriculture and rural development, which is a good example of the kind of work that can be carried out by the agricultural machinery, the people who work there, the people who work there, and the people who work in Austria and Germany,
