LOUIS XVIII (1755-1824) Roi de France.
L.A.S. "Louis", Mittau July 11, 1798, to Jean-Baptiste Cléry; 1 page in-4. Beautiful letter to the faithful valet of Louis XVI. "If something, my dear Clery, could increase in me the feeling that the misfortunes of my family excite me, your work [Journal de ce qui s'est passé à la tour du Temple pendant la captivité de Louis XVI] which I have just received, would have produced this effect . I have long sought, not to reward you, services such as yours find their reward in themselves, but to satisfy myself by giving you a mark of honor that can attest both to your courageous fidelity and to my recognition, I believe I have found it. The motto of the Order of St. Louis makes it quite conspicuous that Louis XIV instituted it to be the price of worth; if it was intended only for military service, it is because the most striking evidence of the virtue he wished to honour seemed to be reserved for the profession of arms. But could he foresee the fate that awaited his descendants?.... You have shown no less courage in the prison of the Temple, than the warrior who braves death in the field of honour, and in granting you the decoration that serves as his reward, I do not wound the spirit of this noble institution. I regret not being able to arm you Knight with my own hand, if I do not believe that I am increasing the price of a gift which will be transmitted to you by that of Monsieur; and Louis XVI of the sojourn where his virtues have placed him, will applaud the sentiment of his two brothers gathered together to honour in concert that of his subjects who gave him until the last moments the marks of an unfailing devotion " .
