MALESHERBES Chrétien Guillaume de Lamoignon de (1721-1794) magistrat et ministre, il défendit Louis XVI devant la Convention et fut guillotiné [AF 1775, 38e f]. L.A.S. " de Lamoignon de Malesherbes " and a P.S. " Malesherbes ", 1752-1768 ; 1 page in-4 each (3 engraved portraits attached). Paris 3 August 1752. He informed the Academy of his correspondent's letter: "Nothing is fairer than your request. We will see with great pleasure alongside the works of the academicians, those of a man whose talents, zeal, and knowledge have earned our esteem. I am very flattered in particular that this matter has passed through my hands "... March 11, 1768, as "vice-president of the academy", signed by 5 other academicians. The "commissioners appointed by the academy to judge the dissertation which is to be crowned this year in the public assembly of Easter" decide "that the prize should be given to the dissertation which carries for sentence nothing is beautiful but the true one; returned in the academy the ticket was opened and we found that this dissertation belonged to Mister abbot de GOURCY "... In addition to Malesherbes, the director BARTHELEMY, the commissioners BRÉQUIGNY, GARNIER and GAUTIER DE SIBERT, and THE BEAUTIFUL secretary, signed it. A P.A. is attached: anecdote on PIRON and VOLTAIRE with a quatrain (half page in-4).
