MARIE-JOSÈPHE DE SAXE (1731-1767) Dauphine de France; mere d - Lot 748
MARIE-JOSÈPHE DE SAXE (1731-1767) Dauphine de France; mere de Louis XVI, de Louis XVIII et de Charles X. 23 L.A.S. " MarieJosephe " (2 unsigned), Versailles, 1750-1766, to the countess de TOULOUSE (18) or to the duke of PENTHIÈVRE her son (5); 23 pages small in-4 or in-8, 9 envelopes and 7 addresses, several with red or black wax seals on the arms. Nice correspondence to her aunt, full of affection and attention. On August 17, 1750, she describes her condition: "The size of my waist is enormous, yet I am very light. ... I am dying to be undone of this big package which is quite inconvenient" [her first child, Marie-Zéphirine, was born on August 26; she lived only five years]. On February 24, 1754, she mourns the death of her third child, but another boy will be born on August 26 of the same year; it will be the future LOUIS XVI. She evokes the life in Versailles and the illness of her son the Count of Provence [the future LOUIS XVIII] (May 9, 1763) and quotes several times her brother François-Xavier de SAXE, Count of LUSACE, who fought successfully in the army of the King of France. The letters to the Duke of PENTHIÈVRE (17 August-11 September 1766) are concerned about the state of health of the Countess of Toulouse, his mother, who died on 30 September 1766. An L.A.S. of François duc de MODÈNE, father of the Duchess of Penthièvre, is attached just after the marriage of his daughter to the Countess of Toulouse (Venice 29 January 1745).
