NAPOLÉON Ier (1769-1821) Empereur. - Lot 761
NAPOLÉON Ier (1769-1821) Empereur. L.A.S. "Buonaparte, Paris 19 vendémiaire [IV (October 11, 1795), to Mme Marcelle CLARY]; 1 page and a half in-4. Interesting letter a few days after the days of Vendémiaire, when Bonaparte crushed the royalist insurrection. ["Letter of the greatest importance written six days after Bonaparte had crushed the insurrection of the royalist sections against the Convention, in the days of 13 and 14 Vendémiaire. The deputy of Paris at the Convention Louis-Stanislas-Marie FRÉRON (1754-1802) was sent on a mission immediately after "the days of Vendémiaire" to the southern departments to put a stop to the royalist reaction and put an end to the massacres; he was in rather close contact with General Bonaparte since, at the latter's request, he took Lucien Bonaparte with him, who accompanied him on several of his journeys" (J. Arnna). Marcelle CLARY, née Guey (1765-1804) had married in 1785 Étienne-François Clary (1757-1823), deputy in the Legislative Corps, half-brother of Julie and Désirée Clary; son of a first bed of François Clary (1725- 1794), he had as sisters (cited in this letter) Marie-Jeanne de Pluvinal, and Thérèse-Catherine Le Jeans]. "Fereron [Brother] who is going on mission to Marseilles will give you this letter. I beg you, Madam, to do to him all the honesty you would do to me. You will find in him a man loving to serve, loyal and a good boy. I told him of the friendship I have for your family. So he will seek to be of use to you. Do what he will depend upon you to make his stay in Marseille agreeable. Make him meet Mrs. Dejean and Mrs. Pluvinal as well. All is well here. The Royalists have been defeated. But you needn't fear that the terror [he first wrote about the overloaded terrorists] will come back - we don't like it any more than you do. If major occupations do not keep me in Paris I will gladly come to Marseilles but the Convention has appointed me to command under the orders of Representative BARRAS the army of inertia. F
