SIEYÈS Emmanuel-Joseph (1748- 1836) abbe, homme politique, conventionnel (Sarthe), membre du Directoire, essayiste.
2 L.A.S. "Sieyes", 1788-1797; 4 and 1 pages in-4, one address with a broken red wax stamp (engraved portrait attached). Paris 10 June 1788, as commissioner to the Superior Chamber of the Clergy of France. He awaited the intentions of the Comptroller General on the various articles concerning them, notably the twentieth-century tax. He had a memorandum prepared by the lawyer Polverel, who thought that "as long as we do not have the subscription for the 20th, it would be useless to press for the other direct taxes"; but Sieyès urged him to prepare this memorandum so as not to waste time. "I also pointed out to him that the subscription of the 20th century was, for some reason, paralysed by the general control"; but this does not exempt him from presenting the brief... He asked the Duke of LUXEMBOURG to present their articles to the Minister of Finance; He learns from various quarters "that the king has waived for the year 1788 any surplus on the taxation of the 20th; [...] this is already a point gained [...] I have learnt that much is being done to modify the tax on priests, all the assemblies have hastened to provide briefs ... 29 floréal V (18 May 1797), to the Citizen President of the 2nd Class of the Institute. "One of the first acts of my convalescence and one of the dearest to my heart is to express to the class of the Institute to which I belong all my sensitivity and my respectful recognition for the honourable mark of interest that it kindly gave me on the occasion of my assassination. ... My wounds are closed and the healing of my hand is proceeding quite rapidly."
