Autograph excerpt from diary. [Camp Sainte-Marthe (Marseille), August-September 1921]. 2 p. on 1 f. in-8 (22.6 x 17.8 cm) of squared paper from a notebook, black ink. Moving autograph pages from a diary kept by Mermoz at the military camp of Sainte-Marthe, near Marseille, while the young pilot was waiting to leave for Syria. Scratched and corrected autograph manuscript. "Happy or sad? A pilot doesn't show up, he presents his logbook. So how will I do it? Finally patience. No doubt he will arrive. This afternoon, it suddenly seemed to me that I was, as the old colonial grunts say, in Biribi, seeing my poor old mechanics digging and ploughing the earth under a hellish sky. With their colonial helmets, their bare torsos, soaked in sweat and dust, and soiled with dirt, they looked more like public works punishments than convicts; to me I considered myself to be playing the role of a guard. [...]. As I write this, a good Senegalese man has just asked me to write him a letter, [which] I am not refusing him. I am translating his naive sentences into French. ...] It is with emotion and astonishment that I realized how much the feeling of family and fraternity exists in an incredible and touching way in these great children who are said to be so uncivilized. How many young Frenchmen are capable of writing a letter as affectionate and wise as this brave and naive Senegalese wrote to his brother. "He little brother, me big brother, me always set an example," he said to me gravely and I shook hands with this frank and honest man.
