MERMOZ (Jean)
Autograph manuscript of the Report on the Causes and Conclusions of the F-ANBL Accident. [September 4, 1936]. 3 p. in-4 (26.9 x 21 cm) wove paper, bistre ink and coloured pencil. Original manuscript of the report Mermoz wrote following the fatal accident of his comrade Gaston Génin, chief pilot at Air France, co-pilot Roger Savarit and "radio" Albert Aubert. The plane, which was carrying mail for South America, crashed on August 2, 1936 in Albine in the Montagne Noire: "Having taken part in no official investigation, we can only judge the facts by putting ourselves in Génin's shoes. Departure from Le Bourget at 2.45 am. Meteorological information allowing us to take the start with confidence (see weather sheet in the file). Génin is the specialist of flights without visibility. A bad weather bank 200 km deep between Brive and Toulouse, with ceilings from 3 to 600 meters is not an obstacle for a good airline pilot, let alone one who has seen many others and more difficult ones. Bordeaux is clearing up according to the latest ONM forecasts. A road ending in the west of Toulouse can only offer the greatest safety. He is wary of the Toulouse gonio. All the more reason to take the west road. He prefers to take a Wibault that has no onboard gonio but has extra range than the other Wibault that has the onboard gonio but has less range. He knows that range provides a much greater margin of safety. He makes a wise decision...". Enclosed are: 2 typed letters signed by the Director of Civil Aeronautics in Mermoz, in his capacity as safety delegate for the company Air-France, asking him to write a report on this accident and then acknowledging receipt of it (Paris, 8 August and 11 September 1936; set 1 f. and 1 bifeuillet in-4). PROVENANCE: Sale, Paris, 11 October 2008, lot M107. Slightly browned paper, a few small stains and slight folds.
