SAINT-EXUPÉRY (Antoine de)
Corrected original typeface from Terre des hommes. [Late 1938-early 1939]. 225 p. in-8 (27 x 21 cm) of various fine papers, red chagrined percaline bradel cardboard and 1 volume in-8 (19 x 13.5 cm), Sienna morocco, spines ribbed, gilt and cold-framed fillets on the inside covers and endpapers, all margins, covers and spines preserved (back bindings). An important corrected typeface from Terre des hommes. This set is precious for more than one reason: very probably unknown (only one typeface, preserved at the Bibliothèque nationale de France, is mentioned by the publishers of the Complete Works), this typeface includes multiple erasures and corrections and, on several occasions, very important modifications of text and composition, and the typographical indications it bears resemble a set of proofs. Covering all eight chapters of the book, it thus offers a singularly different version from the one published in 1939. Thus, the edited text of the 2nd, 3rd and 4th paragraphs of chapter VIII, "Les Hommes", manuscript here by the author in the line spaces, is particularly far from the typewritten version crossed out by the latter: "Everything is paradoxical in man, as we well know. One fills him up and he falls asleep, one strips him down and he wakes up, the generous if one enriches him becomes a ladre, the poor poet if one puts him in a palace, no longer knows how to write his poems. But it is also true that prosperity favours rebirths, that luxury refines the spirit, and that it is necessary to raise man, to ensure him peace". This typewriting bears at the top, accompanying the dedication to Henri Guillaumet handwritten in black pencil by a hand other than that of the author, a long autograph letter signed by the author: "For Jean Artur, this text from 'Terre des hommes' which was given to the printer and still bears the type indications [...].
