SAINT-EXUPÉRY (Antoine de)
Original typewritten and corrected from Vol sur Arras [War Pilot]. n.d. Late 1941. [2] p., 200 p. in-4 (27.4 x 21.6 cm) of American "Esleeck Fidelity Onion Skin" paper, black ink and black pencil, red sorrow at the bradel, gold mention on the first plate "Vol Sur Arras / by Antoine de Saint Exupéry / original manuscript / with autograph dedication. Valuable original corrected typewriting of Pilote de guerre, entitled "Vol sur Arras". Published in English in New York on February 20, 1942, under the title Flight to Arras, then in French in Paris, under the title Pilote de guerre, on November 27, 1942, this book, intended to celebrate French heroism, had considerable resonance in the United States, even though it had been banned in France by the occupation authorities and was only clandestinely distributed by the resistance movements. The typewriter has pencil erasures and corrections; an entire paragraph has been reworked (pp. 177-178). On f. 21 appears the unredacted version of the famous sentence about Hitler censored at the request of the Propagandastaffel by Gallimard: "Hitler who started this insane war". The typing is accompanied by a beautiful sending to Nada de Bragance ("Plume d'Ange") on 2 ff. of "Ramapo Bond" paper, signed by Saint-Exupéry in black pencil: "My little Plume d'Ange, I need to see you again. I'm tired. I've taken a heavy load off my shoulders. And it's not a question of being able to live in peace by getting rid of it, nor of being able to breathe by taking it on. ...] And now my little book is about to come out. And all the slander and jealousy is brewing as usual. You can see it from here, the mob of fake Frenchmen in New York already stirring. I feel a thousand signs fermenting the swamp... Ah! Feather of Angel that I'm sad, sick and tired! There's my bear. I don't think any good of it - believe it. I've written it out of order inside. I couldn't say what I wanted. I beg you to wire me when you get
