DUKAS PAUL (1865-1935) COMPOSITEUR - Lot 109
DUKAS PAUL (1865-1935) COMPOSITEUR L.A.S. "PD.", Villefranche sur Mer 25 January 1921, to Gustave SAMAZEUILH; 1 page small in-8, address on verso. On the preparations for the revival of his opera Ariane et Barbe-Bleue (first performed at the Opéra-Comique on May 10, 1907; Suzanne BALGUERIE will sing the role of Ariane at this revival on May 3, 1921). "As far as the orchestra is concerned, I believe that, unless something unforeseen happens, we will have to resign ourselves... by leaving it to H. [Louis HASSELMANS] the care of the preparations and the substitution. [...] Carré writes me that the question of the lead role is settled [...] and that Merentié is at his disposal, as is Mme Balguerie. I prefer this certainty to the obscurity of the first combination and I find it preferable for Mme Balguerie as well. You know why. But how do you expect me to reject Miss Baye and Mrs. Calvet whom I do not know? If I had names to propose I would be very embarrassed and yet the role of Sélysette is crucial! How I miss Brohly! As for the Nourrice, perhaps we could get Thévenet back, such a good and reliable musician. And Mme Greslé, is there nothing to try? In reality the work seems to me to be quite dislocated as an interpretation. And it seems that the orchestra has become very weak too! Here I am!"...
