WAR 1939-1945 - Lot 131
WAR 1939-1945 POSTER Liberators? Liberation by the Army of Crime, [February 1944]. 119 x 79 cm (framed). The red poster of the Manouchian group. Photographic poster on a red background of German propaganda. [On February 21, 1944, at Mont-Valérien in the Paris region, 23 resistance fighters were executed by the Germans. They were members of the Francs-Tireurs Partisans-Main d'œuvre Immigrée group and had been arrested at the end of 1943. The Germans then used them for propaganda purposes. As soon as they were executed, these posters were put up as an example. The aim was also to stigmatize their origins (Polish, Armenian, Jewish...) to discredit them in the eyes of the French population. But the expected effect was the opposite and the "Manouchian Group", named after its leader, became an example of martyrdom and galvanised the resistance fighters. In 1955, Aragon dedicated a poem to them, Strophes pour se souvenir, transformed into a song in 1959 by Léo Ferré under the title l'Affiche Rouge]. Another propaganda poster is attached: "You too! Your comrades are waiting for you in the French division of the Waffen SS" (1942); drawn by Ottomar ANTON; 120 x 80 cm.
