BARBEY D'AUREVILLY JULES (1808-1889)
Autograph letter signed [to Charles BAUDELAIRE]. S.I, "Tuesday morning" [3 June 1856]; 1 page in-8. "Bring me, my dear friend, your volume of Poe. I want to make a quotation from your notice, and, precisely, two leaves have become detached from my volume in my wanderings, and the few lines I want to quote are on these two leaves. I will hold your volume for you while I copy these few lines, - and you can take it away. The flu has seized your article to-day, but you may count on it for next Tuesday, my day of return to the paper and entry into the serial. It's almost done. Yours in friendship." Superb document calligraphed in red ink. Barbey's literary clairvoyance and Baudelaire's shady genius. Barbey, a critic for the periodical Le Pays, had on July 17, 1853, scorned Amédée Pichot's translation of Edgar Allan Poe's tales, regretting that Baudelaire had still not given his own - he was unaware at the time that the periodical's management had rejected Baudelaire's translation several times. Having already had his review of Les Fleurs du mal rejected in 1857, Barbey fought hard and won his case: Le Pays published the Histoires extraordinaires in serial form from 25 July 1854 to 20 April 1855, and, on 10 June 1856, Barbey's review of the volume published by Lévy.
