SAND George (1804-1876) - Lot 464
SAND George (1804-1876) Autograph letter signed "George", addressed to [LOUIS BLANC], 3 1/4 pages, large in-8, in his figures. George Sand praises the work of her correspondent: "Be compensated for such a hard task by its greatness, by the light you will give to the world and by the good you will do to us all". She announces her departure from Paris and her reasons for leaving: the annulment of the marriage of Augustine, her adopted daughter. On the eve of the wedding, the future husband, "the great artist, the noble heart who had given himself to her, has suddenly made us tremble. He is ill, not from this external illness [...] but from a nervous exaltation that borders, I would not say on madness, but on dark and whimsical monomania." Sand therefore takes Augustine away from Paris to forget this sad affair. Solange (George Sand's daughter) stays in Paris for a few more days because her husband, the sculptor Auguste Clésinger, is "busy working on a large statue". This letter is probably addressed to Louis Blanc (1811-1882), a French journalist and revolutionary. A member of the Republican Party, he published in 1840, Organisation du travail, in which he attacked the bosses, and pointed out that the worker must join forces to fight against poverty. Member of the provisional government in 1848, he was exiled to England. In 1848, Sand supported the Second Republic, at its side.
