VERLAINE PAUL (1844-1896) - Lot 481
VERLAINE PAUL (1844-1896) Exceptional collection of six manuscripts by Paul Verlaine. 27 pages in-4, 1884-1891, English post-binding, red morocco, ribbed spine, gilt edges, duck-green morocco lining, gilt head (hinges rubbed, the manuscript leaves are mitered following the corresponding printed pages, four of them signed). - La Bonne Goutte (4 p. in-8), signed, with several corrections and additions, some variants with the defi nitive version; - Au Pays du Mufl e by Laurent Tailhade (4 p. in-4), article in support of Tailhade published in 1891. With an entirely unpublished leaflet and numerous variants with the defi nitive version, whose manuscript is in the Jacques Doucet Library; - Quelques-uns de mes rêves (10 p. in-4), signed. This is the first chapter of Mémoires d'un veuf, which appeared in pre-original form in the magazine Le Décadent on October 20, 1886 under the title "Un de mes rêves". Some corrections and variants; - Conte de Fées (4 p. in-4), text published in La Revue Indépendante in March 1888, then in La Vie Populaire of March 28, 1891and reprinted in Histoires comme ça. Numerous corrections but few variants; - Café de lettres (2 p. in-4), signed, published as a supplement to Mémoires d'un veuf but with numerous variants. The text first appeared in the Journal de Lutèce, July 20-27, 1884, but not in the original edition of Mémoires d'un veuf of 1886, only in the OEuvres posthumes, tome III in the 1903 edition of Messein. The scene is set in the Café Voltaire, Place de l'Odéon, where Verlaine was a regular. The protagonists are not formally identified; Léo for Léon Valade, a friend of Verlaine's youth, as well as Albert Mérat, here under the guise of Albrecht, and Franz the illustrious for François Coppée. Pablo could be Verlaine himself, having already used this pseudonym to sign Les Amies. The Café Voltaire evenings were also attended by Germain Nouveau and Catulle Mendès; - An untitled fragment of the article in the new edition (1888) of Poètes Maudits that Verlaine dedicated to himself under the anagram Pauvre Lélian (3 p. in-4). Variations with the final text.
