VERLAINE PAUL (1844-1896)
Two autograph letters signed. - Autograph letter signed to Rodolphe SALIS, Paris, Hôpital Broussais, Saturday, September 20th, 1 page in-8 in ink on paper of the Hospital Broussais. "Here is the 4th chronicle of the Hospital. It is a bit pro Domo mea, but I think it is a good example. You must still owe me something on the previous copy. See to see. I will be obliged to you to send me, including the amount of the present chronicle, as much as you can by money order backed here, Broussais Hospital, bed 28, Lasègue room, 96, rue Didot, Paris, Plaisance, where I am still! for some time. Excuse my rapacity, I am in trouble, because of delays on the part of debtors, subscribers, etc. I am not a man who can afford to pay for my work. I am not a man of money, although Vanier (!!!!) claims it. You know that in the old days I gave you a lot of copy, verse and prose without asking for a penny. Alas! I am no longer rich at all! In the past and in the present, always for you (from 1 to 2 or from 5 to 6, a Secretariat of the Theatre) at the Théâtre-Français..." Rodolphe Salis was the director of the Chat Noir. - Autograph letter signed to "MY DEAR FRIEND". Paris, Brouissais Hospital, November 22, 1886. 3 pages and a half in-8 in ink. Cut at the bottom of one sheet with missing text and stains. "I don't know when I will be discharged, maybe in 8 days, maybe in a month. I would rather be out in months, so much so that I am, in Holy poverty!" ... "In the meantime, I'm making up a bunch of very familiar stories that I intend, after they have appeared in paying newspapers, to put together in two volumes: Contes tout ainsi, Histoires comme ça" ...
