VERLAINE PAUL (1844-1896)
Imprécations, autograph poem signed, [Hôpital Broussais fi n 1892 or early January 1893] on administrative paper of the Administration générale de l'Assistance publique à Paris; 1 page in-12 square in ink, sheet torn vertically. Autograph poem entitled Imprécations. This poem is part IX of the collection Dans les Limbes. The present manuscript was used for the printing of the book which was published in May 1894 by Vanier. The poem consists of two dainties, numbered I and II; the title and numbering have not been retained in the edition. The manuscript was used for the printing. In the upper left-hand corner, Verlaine has inscribed the title Dans les Limbes. Composed of amorous verses, this collection is probably dedicated to Philomène Boudin, a prostitute who became the poet's mistress in the 1990s and who was primarily concerned with extracting money from him when he had it. The first section evokes "wicked", "envious" people who try by "their manoeuvres" and "their malice" to break up the couple. In the second section, the poet, battered by misery and trouble, is soothed by the woman he celebrates in the last four lines "Strong woman whom scorn arms and defends / Good woman who defends me like a child / Gentle woman who smiles at me, sublime woman/ O my wife who will receive my ultimate breath!"
