CHIRICO GIORGIO DE (1888-1978).
L.A.S. "G. de Chirico", Rome 4 August 1948, to Vittorio BARBAROUX; 2 pages in-8 (binder holes affecting a few words, cracks, small lacks in the left margin of the second leaf); in Italian. Interesting letter to his Milanese gallery owner. His metaphysical painting having been successful, De Chirico is bringing out four new canvases ("quadri metafisici")... The payments were received, as agreed. He still had to receive the one from Argentina, for which Chirico asked his friend to help him. In exchange, he offers him "un mio ricordo [one of his works] in segno di riconoscenza"... He then reassures him as to the quality and subject matter of the works he will soon entrust to him for his Milan exhibition, having to dispose of the following paintings towards the end of the month or the beginning of October, of which he gives the dimensions: "Ettore e Andromaca - mis. 100 x 70; Interno metafisico - 97 x 68; Trovatore - 63 x 50; Piazza d'Italia - 95 x 70", all of which are very beautiful and which he is in no hurry to sell. He then warns Barbaroux against a young painter named ZUFFI, an adventurer, who has sent him a picture of a painting for authentication. This "quadro metafisico con biscotti" looks like a fake, and he replied to him in this sense. [Piero ZUFFI (1919-2006), then just back from a penniless sojourn in France, would go on to a successful career as a theatre designer at Giorgio Strehler's Piccolo Teatro, then at La Scala in Milan].
