DELACROIX Eugène (1798-1863).
L.A.S. "Eug. Delacroix", March 18, 1833, to Félix DEHÈQUE; 3 pages in-4, address (small tear by broken seal). He expresses his dissatisfaction to the secretary of the census board of the 10th Legion of the National Guard. Having presented the necessary certificates, he "found in the reporting captain a not very obliging obstinacy to present my conduct as very blamable", and to consider the attestations as "a matter of complacency". The sergeant major wanted to force him to stand guard the next day: "It was absolutely impossible for me, in view of the urgency of the matter, to release my word to the persons to whom I had given daylight for my work the next morning," and he had already stood guard some ten days before. "I would have gone myself to explain all this to you, if the hope of giving to the Salon various works I am dealing with had not deprived me of going to ask your forgiveness" for the troubles of this affair... Attached is a L.A.S. "Eug. Delacroix", Thursday evening [1833-1834], to CUVILLIER-FLEURY, governor of the Duc d'Aumale (1 page in-8, address with red wax seal). He was unable to attend his invitation: "I was beginning to suffer from a migraine with all its accompaniments, from which I am still suffering at the present time"...
