Wednesday [17 May 1843]. "I cannot leave with your good mother: too many reasons keep me here. It will therefore be a little later. Painting is not done with a gun in your hand and across fields, unless you adopt the landscape at the expense of history. However I claim you and very seriously you must come back. You will hunt in your dreams like Pistolet [Nohant's dog]: that is all I want to promise you. You would be too late and you would undoubtedly fall short of your debut. And he signs: "Eug. Delacroix your teacher". January 2, 1851. "Dear friend, come and dine with me on Sunday. You will find Pierret the father, Riesener & some old friends of mine. We will talk about painting all evening and you will give me news of your good mother"...
