DUFY RAOUL (1877-1953).
L.A.S. "Raoul Dufy", Perpignan [1937], to his friend Paul-A. ROBERT; 2 pages in4. He is hospitalized at Dr. Nicolau's clinic, and his treatment brings a real improvement: "this morning I was able to walk for 10 minutes [...] two months ago it was impossible for me to stand on my legs and without arm movements, almost blocked. For more than 15 days I have been working. I opened my sketchbooks and took out watercolours. Thus I have started the series of my orchestras, which are beginning to take on a human face, and there are also green racecourses decorated with British colours, the colours brighten up the monotonous days of my hospital room, haunted by Spanish sisters. The maid is Andalusian, the barber Catalan, who shaves him while reciting Cervantes' Don Quixote, and the great Spanish poets: "this atmosphere is surprising. Dr NICOLAU and his entourage are angels for him. He hopes to improve so that one day he can return to a normal life and "continue my work with the maroger mediums". He does not write and has no news from anyone: "I know that DERAIN is going to work in Aubusson on tapestries, I have one to do but I am unable to get started at present I have only a small model done". He did receive "your magnificent booklet of shells [Les Merveilles de la Mer. Les Coquillages], VALÉRY's text dazzled me. As for the shells, you know how much I love them, even in watercolours"...
