LAM Wifredo (1902-1982).
22 L.A.S. "Lam" or "Wifredo", one with original DRAWING, and one L.S., 1958-1970, to Sergio Albio GONZALES; 28 pages of various sizes (including 3 postcards with addresses), envelopes and addresses, 3 of them with drawings; in Spanish. Interesting correspondence to his friend and Cuban compatriot, about his private life, his work and exhibitions, and about the Cuban Revolution, with a letter decorated with a drawing. The writer and artist Sergio Albio GONZALES (born in Cuba in 1931) lives in Stockholm. Lam's letters are written from Stockholm, Paris, Albissola Mare in Italy, Milan, Zürich... We can only give here an overview of this correspondence. It was in June 1955 that Wifredo Lam met the Swedish artist Lou Laurin, in Paris, at the Galerie du Dragon, during an exhibition dedicated to Latin American artists. At the beginning of this correspondence, Lam asks his friend, who is in Stockholm, to help him in his relationship with Lou, with whom he has problems; he is desperate; she does not want him to join her in Stockholm; Sergio could see her and try to find out what is going on: "Estoy en dificultades con Lou. [...] Estoy desesperado. [...] she doesn't want me to go to STK [...] I ask you if you can see her [...] with great caution [...] to ask her about this to see what is going on and then write to her". Wifredo and Lou finally got married in New York in 1960 and had their first child in May 1961, named Eskil-Soren-Obini Lam, a little Swedish Cuban who did not know that he was a citizen of F. Castro, in those difficult times; Gonzales' daughter was born some time later: "Yo lo encuentro muy simpatico este pequeno sueco cubano, no sabe el que es cuidadano de F. Castro [...] Los momentos mas dificil pasan ahora. Dentro de poco una sonriza de tu hija sera como una aurora en tu espirito - en tu ser"... The theme of the Cuban Revolution is recurrent in the letters. Lam, although he broke with communism, following his friend Aimé Césaire in condemning Stalinism, still supports Fidel CASTRO, asking Gonzales what he thinks about Cuba, the United States, Castro, the revolution, friends, enemies, etc., and recalls his ideas in favor of justice and the cause of the Revolution in their country: "Dime que tu pienses sobre este asunto de nuestro pais: USA, Castro, Revolucion - amigos - enemigos, etc. [...] you sabes bien mis ideales [...] por la justicia y la causa de la Revolucion de nuestro pais"... He shares with his friend his criticism of the American government, fearing that it is preparing an invasion of Cuba with mercenaries and criminals; he hopes that Castro will be able to annihilate those who seek to spill the blood of the Cuban people; no one in Cuba wants war; but the Republic of Cuba disturbs the Americans, they are hysterical to the point of ridicule: "Parece que los Americanos preparan un grand invasion - con mercenarios de todas las racallas especialmente legionarios tipo Para [....] criminals, ladrones, violadores sin chape esto es lo que me dicen los amigos mios en Paris [...] espero que Castro tenga la buena suerte de aniquilar los que quieren tal cosas ensangrentar el pueblo de Cuba, que los dejen en paz. No one wants to fight, that's silly. Pero el gob. de los americanos del norte - no se conforma, les duele la R. cubana. son histericos hasta el ridículo"... He also informs his friend about his work, his exhibitions in Cuba, with Krugier in Geneva, at the Kunsthalle in Basel or in Munich, and the prizes he has won, such as the Guggenheim International Prize in 1964. Etc. One letter has a large blue pen drawing in the margin. On two envelopes and a postcard, Lam had fun drawing fancy stamps of Fidel Castro ("Viva Castro") and "St. Patricio Lumumba Martir". A letter and a card from Lou Laurin Lam complete this set. Attached: Jacques CHARPIER, Lam (Paris, le Musée de Poche, 1960), with dispatch a.s. "para mi buen amigo Albio, un abrazo grande, Wifredo Lam Zurich 1961", and a yellow felt-tip drawing on the false title; Lam annotated the last pages of the book, to complete his bibliography and biography.
