LÉGER FERNAND (1881-1955). - Lot 134
LÉGER FERNAND (1881-1955). L.A.S. "FLeger", Lisores (Calvados) October 1946, to a friend; 3 pages in-4. On his rediscovery of Paris after five years of exile in the United States, and on the modern world. He discovers Paris: "Let's talk about walls. The American wall is a geometric abstraction - an obstacle, it keeps you at a distance. At home, my little father is one of the family. It's round, half-curved, it turns, it's soft, if you caress it, you'll still have some at your fingertips"... He crosses the Place du Carrousel: "Its ground in September all in flowers which will come up against magnificent grey walls, severe architecture neither too high, nor too low, just. Nothing spectacular. It's there. It's on a human scale, it's beautiful. It's hard in Paris, as you can imagine. Two and two never add up to four. It's a hell of a country where you always have to keep your eyes open. Chance and luck are always at play. Free time is invaluable. It's much more varied, rich and intense than New York, but it doesn't look like it. Here we have broken all the ceilings. The current slogan among young people is: "Fuck the fixed values"... He worries about the competition of inventors of destructive devices: "The rhythm of destruction is increasing; as for creation! It's the Middle Ages, it's walking on foot, on all fours. You always have to wait nine months for your kid to appear; in one tenth of a second he is ruined. Disillusioned, he submits an idea to his friend: "I foresee that we are going to enter the Wonderful Zone of the Miracle", and he thinks of appealing to poets, to madmen, to saints if there are any left: "If yes, we hire, but very authentic saints free from prejudices and old dogmas - Plus some communists - Unfortunately my "Madmen-Saints" I foresee them as very far left - My communists, even if they are 100/100, are going to become pale conservatives"... And to preside over this international council, he thinks "of a wonderful guy who every morning is called a madman by the right-thinking press. It is Henri MILLER. He is far above narrow and facile nationalism. [...] Would he devote himself? A mystery. I'm not joking. It's serious, the world must start over. We need an entirely new order. The good thing about my stuff is that it taps into a whole new potential that's never been used. Madness-Genius rhymes and mixes"...
