MONET CLAUDE (1840-1926). - Lot 160
MONET CLAUDE (1840-1926). L.A.S. "O. Monet", Paris August 11, 1860, [to Armand GAUTIER]; 1 page in-8 with Paris dry stamp (ink a little pale). Rare youthful letter written at the age of 19 during Monet's first stay in Paris, about his caricatures. [The letter is signed with the initial of his first name, Oscar, which Monet also used to sign the caricatures he drew to earn a living. Through his aunt Lecadre, the young Monet met the painter Armand GAUTIER (1825-1894), who was to take him under his protection, and whose pupil he was for a time]. "I have come to explain to you the reason which has prevented me from going to work at your place for the last three days and I beg you not to attribute this to laziness. Fortune has come to my rescue. I am at the moment doing the work of Pierre Petit [the photographer Pierre PETIT (1831-1909)] in the Gaulois and in the Charivari. I also have several assignments for Le Particulier to do. I am very happy with all this because it will put me back on my feet a bit, as soon as I finish I will come back to work"...
