MONET CLAUDE (1840-1926). - Lot 164
MONET CLAUDE (1840-1926). 2 L.A.S. "Claude Monet", Giverny [ June 1888], to Stéphane MALLARMÉ; 2 pages in-8 each in purple ink, envelopes (ink a little faded with ink discharges). Monet evokes the memory of Manet. [5 June]. "My dear Mallarmé Thank you for sending Whistler's Ten o'clock and the friendly dedication" [Mr. Whistler's "Ten o'clock", a translation by Stéphane Mallarmé, appeared in May in La Revue indépendante and in an offprint]. He passes on Whistler's commission to send a proof to the sculptor CARRIÈS. He retains the hope of having Mallarmé for a day at Giverny "with Mr and Mrs Manet" [Berthe MORISOT and her husband Eugène Manet], and recalls "your promise of L'Après-midi d'un Faune"... 19 June. "My dear Friend Thank you for your so kind letter. I am very happy that you like my paintings, the praise coming from an artist like you, it makes me happy. Yes, poor MANET loved me well, but we return this friendship to him well and I am exasperated by the silence and injustice of all for his memory and his great talent"... [Response to Mallarmé's letter of June 18, "dazzled" by the exhibition of Monet's "Ten Marines of Antibes" and evoking Manet: "Ah yes, as poor Édouard liked to repeat, Monet has genius"...]
