SIGNAC PAUL (1863-1935).
L.A.S. "P. Signac", [late 1899, to Theo VAN RYSSELBERGHE]; 1 1/2 pages in-4 (small cracks repaired). Beautiful testimony of the friendship that united Paul Signac to the family of the painter Theo Van Rysselberghe, and of his passion for cars. "Fin de siècle" embraces and friendships for the "old brother" and his family... "et aïn donc et tra la la"; and he sends "Dabeth" a rare stamp... "It is done: I went to Marseilles to buy 1800 fr a Bollée, of excellent second hand (value 3400), in very good condition. It has just covered with great gusto - 30 per hour - the 140 kilos. Marseille Tropez - and since lying on my back I feel her, and look after her. I am already very strong... in theory. - Provided that practice does not put me in a ditch. Unfortunately, for the last two days it has been raining like it does in the South of France and the roads are impassable. I thought it over - a whole month - before deciding. In short, only the Dion tricycle - or quadri d° (impracticable because of the saddle) - the robust Bollée - and the expensive Panhard - have proven themselves on the roads. - The rest is nice, but it hardly works! All these cars are more or less cluttered Dion engines and weighed down with bodywork"... Finally, he mentions their "aesthetic statements", and Angrand's opinion: "It seems to me, however, that there are essential principles of beauty. - Without that, all these painters would be right who, at the slightest criticism, think they are nailing you with the classic "I see like this, my dear"...
