TOULOUSE-LAUTREC HENRI DE (1864-1901).
L.A.S. "yours Henri", Taussat (Gironde) 17 August [1892], to HER MOTHER, Countess Adèle de TOULOUSE-LAUTREC; 4 pages in-8. About her holiday, and her aunt and cousins Pascal. "My dear Mother, I spent four days at Soulac with my cousins, who were charming, and my poor aunt, who is doing her best not to look overwhelmed. I told her I would try to get you to come, as the exchange of stern but fair letters has made her very sad. In case it does not suit you to see Juliet, I think my aunt would come to see you either at Malromé or elsewhere, where you could (I think) make her swallow the pill of separation which has not yet entered her head. As for a pension, your categorical answer does not allow me to insist. But see what can be done. They could talk to Malromé about it: "I am here to support you and I have done you justice. We recognize that you are the only one who has shown a heart. As for the rest of the family, - they are not white. - I left them in the presence of Suzanne Gonthier who enhances the beach with the brilliance of her presence. They are moreover installed in Soulac for a more than modest sum: 4 large people, a maid and 3 children for 35 F per day, I do not believe that they can live more economically, - and the stories of exaggerated luxury are quite false. Bourges finds that for the moment the best thing they can do is to stay there, waiting for the winter to find jobs"... Correspondence (ed. Herbert Schimmel, 1992), no 240, p. 201.
