TOULOUSE-LAUTREC HENRI DE (1864-1901). - Lot 264
TOULOUSE-LAUTREC HENRI DE (1864-1901). L.A.S. "Your H.", [Paris] Monday [23 October 1893], to HER MOTHER, Countess Adèle de TOULOUSE-LAUTREC; 7 1/2 pages in-8 (some slight splitting, and small stain). Long letter about the Franco-Russian festivities, and his forthcoming move to his studio in the Rue Tourlaque. [As part of the Franco-Russian friendship, the official visit of a Russian admiral and his squadron in October 1893 gave rise to great festivities. In January 1894, Toulouse-Lautrec moved into his new studio in Montmartre, at 7 rue Tourlaque. The end of the letter refers to the poster he made to announce the serial publication in Le Matin of Abbé Faure's memoirs, Au pied de l'échafaud]. "My dear Mother, Long live Russia! And curiously enough there is such a patriotic or international impetus that this eight-day July 14 has not been tiring. I did have a few half hour waits here and there to endure. But it was all about the European balance and I did well. - The town sergeants themselves tried to be friendly, and that's saying a lot. At last they are leaving tomorrow, probably quite tired. Now let's talk seriously. I have rented the ground floor apartment of the house next to my studio for 800 francs for one year. Same owner, - which allows me to see ahead. Either rent the ground floor of my studio, same conditions, and move in completely, or find another studio with an apartment. I doubt I'll get the same space for the same price. The advantage is that I know the tenants, the caretaker, the owner, etc... Bourges will settle in Paris temporarily with his wife in our current apartment, waiting for the probable post of Suez (20,000 F) fixed, which is not to be despised. - He is very supportive and hopes to have it. If you can make me a present of 6 small tablecloths and some napkins you would oblige me greatly, as I shall be obliged to mount myself. I am keeping my old maid and find that with about forty francs a month of expenses I have every advantage, mending and lunching at home. I intend to take possession of my lodgings at the end of January, as they are going to be refurbished under my direction. I am working as much as possible in the midst of these combinations and I have a poster to make for the newspaper Le Matin. [...] Always secrecy, of course. P.S. Some very ordinary table knives would also do me good. - In short, I'm getting married without a wife"... Correspondence (ed. Herbert Schimmel, 1992), no. 318, pp. 237-238.
