TOULOUSE-LAUTREC Adèle Tapié de Céleyran, comtesse de (1841-1930) mère du peintre.
L.A.S. "Adèle", [Paris] Hôtel Pérey May 1 , to his mother Louise TAPIÉ DE CÉLEYRAN (née d'Imbert Du Bosc); 4 pages in-8 (small cracks in folds).
On the artistic dispositions of young Henri, aged 17. [In addition to the painter René PRINCETEAU (1843-1914), into whose studio Toulouse-Lautrec would enter in 1882, the letter mentions the brothers Arthur (1838- 1909) and Charles (1848-1926) du PASSAGE, both animal sculptors].
She did arrive in Paris, followed soon after by her husband Alphonse. "For the time being, the big thing is the blossoming of our young artist and the success exceeds all my expectations. Princeteau is half mad about it, the two du Passage are thrilled and I don't know how many other artists predict a glorious future for your grandson. All this naturally delights Alphonse and I rejoice in the general joy. It is almost too much happiness for Henry [...] Now what shall we do? Will he go to a master or to the School of Fine Arts? Serious questions"... Henri will recount "Princeteau's pantomime expressing du Passage's amazement at the first sight of the nephew's works. Tomorrow he must go and paint a monkey for his debut; this will be in keeping with the family tradition"... Family news follows.
