LECONTE DE LISLE Charles (1818-1894). - Lot 88
LECONTE DE LISLE Charles (1818-1894). MANUSCRIT autograph signed "Leconte de Lisle", L'Apollonide, lyrical drama in three parts and five tableaux, [ca. 1887-1888]; [2]-54 pages in-fol. mounted on tabs, bound in full midnight blue morocco, spine ribbed, figure "LC" in spandrels on the boards, double gilt fillet on the edges, gilt int. lace (Paul Vié) (corners rubbed, lacks at the headpieces, a few scratches) Complete manuscript of this lyrical drama. Manuscript carefully edited in black ink, used for the printing of the original edition by Lemerre in 1888. It presents a few additions or corrections in violet ink (addition of the name of the composer Servais, modification of the indication of acts in parts), and several verse counts at the end; the title page, not numbered, gives the list of characters. The text will be taken up in the posthumous collection Derniers poèmes (1895), and performed on the stage of the Odéon in 1896. This lyrical drama, in three parts and five tableaux, is inspired by the tragedy Ion by EURIPIDE. L'Apollonide was written on the initiative of the composer Franz SERVAIS (1846-1901), a pupil of Liszt; having chosen the Greek subject, Servais asked the poet for French lyrics. The development of the work is known through an important correspondence from 1877 to 1894. A reduced score for song and piano was published by Choudens in 1890, and the musical work, with a different libretto, was finally performed on January 29, 1899, under the direction of Felix Mottl, at the Grand Ducal Theatre in Karlsruhe, It was "a great success, thanks to a large delegation of journalists and French personalities who had come" (Jean-Marc Luce, "L'Apollonide de Franz Servais et Leconte de Lisle, récit d'une redécouverte", Anabases, n° 24, 2016).
