MOZART Wolfgang Amadeus (1756-1791). - Lot 232
MOZART Wolfgang Amadeus (1756-1791). autograph musical manuscript for the symphony Paris, [1778]: 2 pages of one oblong sheet (22.7 x 31.5 cm). Trumpet part for the magnificent Symphony Paris. Complete musical part for the 1st trumpet, with the title in Mozart's hand: "SInfonia" and "Tromba 1ma in D", for the Symphony No. 31, known as "Paris", K.297/300a. Only known autograph part of this symphony, according to Hermann Beck (Neue Mozart Ausgabe, IV/11/5, Kritischer Bericht, p. e/36, Quellen: A1). The manuscript is written in brown ink on oblong paper with 12 staves, of which 11 are used (p. 1), then 9 (p. 2). The 31st symphony was composed in Paris in June 1778 for the Concert Spirituel, which premiered it on June 18, 1778, with great success: a "concert of applause", Mozart wrote to his father; the score was quickly published by Sieber under the title: "Simphonie du Répertoire du Concert Spirituel avec Trompette et Timballe Adlibitum"; this shows the role played by the trumpet here, especially in the tutti and forte notes, but also to colour certain piano passages. Mozart carefully noted the notes of the trumpet part, with a count of the bars where it is silent, and indications of nuances: "pianiss.", "mf", "cresc."; at the beginning of the first staff he noted the title: Sinfonia. At the top of the first page he wrote the indication of the first movement: "All° Assai"; and at the bottom of this page: "Andante tacet" (there are in fact no trumpets or timpani in the second movement). The second page, at the top of which Mozart wrote "Allegro", is devoted to the 3rd and last movement. Provenance: André Erben; his sale (Berlin, Leo Liepmannssohn, 12 October 1929, no. 6); sale J.A. Stargardt, Marburg 11-12 March 1993 (no. 1007); sale J.A. Stargardt, Berlin 5-6 June 2012 (no. 682)
