GOUNOD Charles. - Lot 287
GOUNOD Charles. autograph musical manuscript, Madrigal [for George Dandin, 1874]; title and 8 folio pages. Air for George Dandin. This Madrigal was to take its place in the unfinished comic opera George Dandin [CG 20; Condé pp. 467-470], after Molière. It is sung by Clitandre (act III, scene 6), with the words: " Il faut donc s'y résoudre "... The orchestra includes oboes, clarinets, bassoons, horns, violins I and II, violas, solo cello, cellos and double basses. The manuscript is carefully notated in purple ink on 24-stave paper, with a system of 14 staves per page; each leaf has been crossed out with a large red pencil signature of Georgina Weldon. This Madrigal is missing from the George Dandin at Yale (Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library, Frederick R. Koch collection). Attached is the autograph manuscript of a draft preface for George Dandin (18 and a half pages in-8 with his monogram, with erasures and corrections; the text was collected in G. Condé's edition of Mémoires d'un artiste, Actes Sud, 2018, p. 263 ff): "This work is an attempt at innovation in the field of dramatic music, I mean declamation and singing in the Theatre. Contrary to the usual practice, instead of being adapted to verses, the music is adapted to Molière's own prose, whose turn so energetic, whose pace so firm, whose form so incisive and penetrating have been scrupulously observed, if not observed at least by the author of the music'... Etc. Plus the autograph manuscript of the plan and cut of the comic opera Le Médecin malgré lui (4 p. in-8 on the letterhead of the Direction de l'Orphéon).
