BIZET Georges (1838 - 1875) - Lot 22
BIZET Georges (1838 - 1875) L.A.S. "Georges Bizet", [Paris early October 1872], to Charles GOUNOD; 9 pages small in-8. Extraordinary and long musical letter from Bizet to his master Gounod, notably about Roméo et Juliette, of which Bizet supervised the rehearsals at the Opéra-Comique, during Gounod's exile in England. "The bonds that unite us are those that neither absence nor silence can loosen. You were the beginning of my life of artist. I result from you. You are the cause, and I am the consequence. I feared to be absorbed, I can confess it to you now and you could notice the effects of this concern. I believe that I am now more in control of my hand, and I can only feel the benefits of your salutary and decisive influence. [...] I don't know, my dear Gounod, what are the causes that have kept you away from us!... We often think of you... We miss you and we still love you. - We needed you here [...] The time has come to organize in Paris great choral masses. You alone had the necessary authority to bring this work to a successful conclusion... how many more years will it take for one of us to feel strong enough to introduce our Parisians to the overwhelming beauties of Bach and Handel. We miss you... and we can only console ourselves with your absence by hoping for your return when the time for Polyeucte has come. As for Roméo et Juliette, he has many things to ask to Gounod, mainly on the question of the cuts to be made, of which he draws up the list, act by act. For the final, he intends to follow "the version of the Theatre Lyrique". He wonders about the Epithalame: "Is it true that you consented to the suppression of this excellent piece? Etc. Finally, he urges Gounod to support REYER rather than François Bazin, to succeed Carafa at the Institute : "a poet would do the job better than a rhetorician without style, without erudition, without conviction, without idea, without anything that resembles from near or far an artistic quality"...
