DUTILLEUX Henri (1916 - 2013) - Lot 48
DUTILLEUX Henri (1916 - 2013) autograph musical manuscript signed "Henri Dutilleux", Sarabande et Cortège for bassoon with piano accompaniment (1942); title and 12 folio pages (publisher's ink stamps). One of the very first works by Henri Dutilleux, for bassoon and piano. Written at the request of Claude Delvincourt, director of the Conservatoire National de Musique de Paris, who wanted both to encourage young composers to "delve into the technique of instruments", and to encourage students to work on new scores and to overcome the technical difficulties, this piece for bassoon and piano, which was imposed on the competitions of the Conservatoire in 1942, is dedicated to the bassoonist Gustave DHÉRIN (1887-1964), a professor at the Conservatoire; it was published in 1942 by the publisher Alphonse Leduc Written in black ink on Durand paper with 20 lines, the manuscript presents corrections by scratching. "The initial ternary rhythm, noted Assez lent, evokes the spirit of the Sarabande with its ornamented theme and detached bass accompaniment. The Cortège that follows is written on a March Movement. The central section of the Cortège is conceived according to a process of imitations between the piano and the bassoon, a process found in all the works of this period. The piece ends with a short virtuoso cadenza, a competition piece, prolonged by the piano which takes up a "fanfare" theme heard earlier" (Marie Delcambre-Monpoël and Maxime Joos). Attached is page 1 of the 2nd proof printed in blue, with the signed printing order, dated April 29, 1942. DISCOGRAPHY Marc Trénel (bassoon) and Pascal Godart (piano), in Dutilleux, Pages de jeunesse, par les Solistes de l'Orchestre de Paris (Indesens 2007); Fany Maselli (bassoon) and Sébastien Vichard (piano), Dutilleux's Chamber Music (Label-Hérisson 2017).
