GOUNOD Charles (1818 - 1893) 3 autographed MUSICAL MANUSCRIPTS signed "Ch. Gounod", [1872]; titles and 32 folio pages (35.5 x 27.5 cm) cut out for engraving and pasted back together with gummed paper. Complete set of two English church services for 4-part mixed choir and organ. A New Morning Service and An Evening Service were published by Rudall, Carte & Co. in 1872 [CG 285-288] (Condé, pp. 868-872). The manuscripts, which were used for the engraving of the edition, are written in brown ink on 26-line paper. Te Deum. We praise thee, o God! A Thanksgiving [CG 285]. Title and 15 pages. No. 1 in the Morning Service, it calls for a solo soprano, and consists of four parts: Moderato, maëstoso in C introduced by the organ; Andante moderato in F, then in B flat major; and finally, the Chorale "Vouchsafe, O Lord", Maestoso, in C. Blessed be the Lord God of Israel. Psalm for 4 voices [CG 286]. Title and 7 pages. Signed on the title page and dated "London, March/72", with this note in pencil: "To complete the Morning Service with the Te Deum". Marked Moderato, this Benedictus is written in G 3/4 and marked Moderato. Evening Service. Title and 10 pages. - Magnifi cat : "My soul doth magnify the Lord"... [CG 287] (p. 1-6), All° maëstoso e moderato in D major in 4/4. "The deliberate simplicity of this Magnifi cat in English finds its justification in the clarity of the contours and the strength of conviction that results" (G. Condé). - Nunc dimittis : "Lord! now lettest thou thy servant"... [CG 288] (p. 6-10), All° (modto maëstoso) in B flat major in 4/4.
