GOUNOD Charles (1818 - 1893) - Lot 71
GOUNOD Charles (1818 - 1893) MUSICAL MANUSCRIPT autograph "Charles Gounod", Aria di Camera by Joseph Adolphe Hasse, 1884; 1 title page and 47 folio pages in a sewn binder. Transcription and orchestration of a baroque aria. This Aria di camera [CG 480] is by the German Baroque composer Johann Adolf HASSE (1699-1783); it dates from 1764. Gounod realized this orchestration in 1884; it was given its first performance on January 10, 1886, at the Châtelet, by the soprano Gabrielle Krauss (1842-1906), under the direction of Édouard Colonne, with the French lyrics: "Ô ma pastourelle", due to the singer Eugénie Vergin, who was to marry Colonne. It was published in 1886 by Henri Lemoine, then sold, on January 22, 1890, to Alphonse Leduc, for one thousand francs, as well as the piano accompaniment. Score for song and orchestra, with the Italian words : "Ah ritorni al campo usato che fugisti pastorella"... This Aria is marked Andantino; it is in 3/4, in E major, and counts 198 measures. The orchestra includes: flutes, oboes, clarinets, bassoons, horns, and strings. The title page reads: ""Aria di Camera" (1764) / by Joseph Adolphe Hasse / with orchestral accompaniment / by Charles Gounod / (Paris, 1884)". The manuscript is in brown ink on 16-line lard paper; the vocal line (with lyrics) was prepared by a copyist. Gounod has made annotations and corrections in blue pencil (notably crossed-out bars); there are also some corrections by scratching.
