GOUNOD Charles (1818 - 1893) - Lot 76
GOUNOD Charles (1818 - 1893) L.A.S. "Ch. Gounod", London February 21, 1872, to a friend [Ernest LEGOUVÉ]; 5 pages in-8 with engraved plan at the address of Tavistock House (slight fading). Long letter about his exile in London after the war and about Faust. His state of health keeps him in London: "this decadence has been going on for nearly six months". As a Frenchman, however, I feel that my duties and rights as a Frenchman come before my rights and interests as an author. I therefore come to ask you to inform the Comité des Arts on my behalf that I offer to the subscription it has just opened my full share of the royalties for Faust on the stage of the Grand Opéra de Paris, from this day until the time of full payment of the war indemnity. I consider that when a mother is ruined, it is to her children that belongs the honor and the happiness to work for her and to make her live"...
