HONEGGER Arthur (1892 - 1955) - Lot 89
HONEGGER Arthur (1892 - 1955) AND DESORMIÈRE Roger (1898 - 1963) autograph musical manuscript by Roger DÉSORMIÈRE, Cavalcade d'amour, [1939] ; 87 pages in-fol. Collaborative film music. Cavalcade d'amour is a film by Raymond BERNARD, based on a screenplay by Jean Anouilh and Jean Aurenche, shot in July 1939 and released on January 17, 1940, with Claude Dauphin, Michel Simon, Saturnin Fabre, and Simone Simon in the main roles. The film tells three stories of thwarted love and marriages of reason taking place at different times in the same castle. Darius Milhaud explains in Ma vie heureuse: "Désormière, Honegger and I composed Cavalcade d'amour together, which represents the same subject treated in three different periods (Middle Ages, 1830, 1930); I chose the first. I chose the first one. Later on, I wrote a suite for wind quintet from this score: La Cheminée du Roi René". The collaboration of Arthur Honegger and the conductor Roger Désormière remains more difficult to specify. Would Désormière have orchestrated the themes given by Honegger, of which we only know with certainty an O Salutaris published separately for this film? Or would he have written the music for the parts not treated by Honegger and Milhaud? The study of this unknown manuscript, confronted with the film, should make it possible to establish this. In any case, it was Roger Désormière, a remarkable conductor, who conducted the music for this film. The manuscript is written in blue ink on 28-line paper (except for the last two numbers on a smaller 12-line paper); it served as a conductor for the recording of the music, and bears corrections and notes in pencil, references to the film's shots, characters and episodes, and timings. The orchestra, which varies according to the piece, requires: 2 flutes, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets, 2 bassoons, 2 horns, 3 trumpets, 2 trombones, timpani, harp, and strings. The manuscript includes the following numbers: Generic. N° 0 + N° 1 tenor song "Dans un château sombre"... (9 p.) ; N° 2 (6 p.) ; N° 3 (5 p.) ; N° 4 (5 p.) ; N° 5 (7 p.) ; N° 6, Très vite (4 p.) ; N° 7 (2 p.) ; N° 8 "Nabot" (2 p.) ; N° 9 (with chorus) (2 p.) ; N° 10 (with choir) (7 p.) ; N° 11 (14 p.) ; N° 12 (12 p.) ; N° 13 (3 p.) ; N° 20 (celesta and harp, 3 p.) ; Suite du n° 23 Tango de Cavalcade d'amour (4 p.).
