LALO Édouard (1823 - 1892) - Lot 100
LALO Édouard (1823 - 1892) 2 L.A.S. "E. Lalo", [Brussels January 1883], to his son Pierre LALO]; 3 pages and a half and 3 pages in-8. Beautiful letters about WAGNER, whose Tetralogy is given at the Théâtre de la Monnaie. Wednesday morning [January 24]. "The Rheingold- has given me everything I expected, no more and no less. Wagner is the most powerful master of the modern orchestra; his effects and procedures are always unexpected and new, so that I, who place the orchestra above all else, never cease to be enthusiastic. As for Wagner's dramatic system, it is quite different, it knocks me out. Everything that happens on the stage is of complete nullity; only the music of Ambroise Thomas disgusts me more; Wagner at least is never flat and vulgar, but his characters have only an eternal and monotonous declamation which continues from one end of the work to the other; all this boring and useless music irritates me because it prevents me from hearing the orchestra; it is embarrassing, such is in short my sincere impression; I have not yet caught the purulent Wagneria".... Saturday [January 27]. "The 1st act and the 3rd act of Siegfrid are the most splendid impression I have ever had at the theater. I do not like the 2nd act which is only bizarre, grotesque, childish, except for a ravishing scene which reproduces (convention) the murmurs of the forest with the song of a bird. [We are staying on Sunday because I want to hear the Wagner concert where fragments of Tristan and the Master Singers are performed. Mrs. Materna is the greatest singer who exists at this time; admirable voice, passionate, absolutely perfect style without any manner; tragedienne to the smallest gestures always noble and sober; she has an authority which imposes the success even towards the opponents who shout against Wagner. The stay in Brussels is very amusing, one hears nothing but disputes on all sides" ....
