LISZT Franz (1811 - 1886) - Lot 107
LISZT Franz (1811 - 1886) L.A.S. "F. Liszt", Weimar September 20, 1882, to the publisher Adolph FÜRSTNER; 4 pages in-8 (cracks in folds well repaired); in German. Interesting letter about his paraphrases and transcriptions of Wagner. He makes a request following an unexpected dispute with representatives of the Schott firm. What is the legal situation in Germany regarding the ownership of publishers of fantasies or transcriptions of opera motives? In France, publishers of opera scores have an autocratic right to accept or reject anything related to them, without any other publisher daring to object ("Wie verhält es sich in Deutschland gesetzlich, mit dem Verlags Eigenthum von Fantasien oder Transcriptionen von Opern Motiven? Zu Frankreich haben allerdings die Verleger desOpern-Partituren autocratisches Recht über jedwedes Ding, darauf bezüglich, zu acceptiren oder abzuweisen, ohne dass ein anderer Verleger sich erlauben dürfte Einspruch zu erheben"). For example, Breitkopf and Härtel published his transcription of the Tannhaüser Marsch, and the Spinneslied from the Fliegende Holländer. Both scores are the property of Meser, and now of his correspondent. Kistner published the Abend Stern (Evening Star) from Tannhaüser. Later, at Tausig's request, Bahn published the transcription of Stillen Heerd from Wagner's Meistersinger. Recently, Liszt undertook a piano piece after Parsifal, entitled Feierlicher Marsch zum heiligen Gral (Solemn March to the Holy Grail), and sent the manuscript to Fürtsner. In his opinion, this is not an easy plagiarism to copy ("Meines Bedünkens ist es kein bequem nachgeschrieben Plagiat")... He would like, if it is legally possible, without dispute, that Fürstner publishes this Parsifal Marsch; if not, that he sends the manuscript back. He wants 1500 marks (500 thalers) for it. This is the price of his transcriptions for three years.....
