LISZT Franz (1811 - 1886) - Lot 109
LISZT Franz (1811 - 1886) L.A.S., Budapest February 22, 1886, to a President [Édouard COLONNE?]; 4 pages in-8; in French. About a concert of his works in Paris, and his Messe de Gran. [It was given twice at Saint-Eustache, under the direction of Colonne, on March 25 and April 2. The concert being set for March 14, he thanks for "the kindness of admitting several of my compositions in the program", regretting "not being able to hear them under your direction, in such great renown"; but he cannot be in Paris before March 20. He sent to the president of the Comité Aubry "the score of the Messe de Gran, and 4 copies of the score for piano and voice. In the large score, large cuts are indicated: they were not considered necessary in several large cities where high ecclesiastical dignitaries pontificated during the complete performance of the Messe de Gran. As an offertory, on one of the feasts of the Blessed Virgin, one could choose the short Ave Maria, or the Ave maris stella, published in the series of church choirs [...] On the subject of the exclusion of women's voices, I have already answered with the full submission that is particularly my duty". Then he frankly admits "that I would not want to risk a second performance of my work in Paris, of the kind done in 66. However, your numerous occupations will not leave you the time to proceed to the necessary rehearsals; consequently it seems advisable to me that you choose a less inconvenient mass than mine for the feast of March 25"...
