PUCCINI Giacomo (1858 - 1924) - Lot 165
PUCCINI Giacomo (1858 - 1924) L.A.S., Torre del Lago 1919-1921, to Sybil SELIGMAN; 2 pages in-4 each; in Italian. November 28, 1919. He returns from hunting. He does not recommend an automobile like his: the bodywork is a real piece of junk. Internally it is beautiful, but the exterior varnish comes off: "The carrozzeria è una vera porcheria. Internamente è bella ma la vernice di fuori si stacca tutta". The weather has been horrible for a month except for a few oases of sun ("qualche oasi di sole")... He wants to treat a Chinese subject [it will be his last opera, Turandot]: "Ho idea di fare un soggetto chinese"... He received the cigarettes... July 13, 1921. He is well but he is in a bad mood. He feels old, and does not have the will to work anymore. He hopes that this is only temporary. Torre del Lago and also Italy have disgusted him a little since the war. There is no more education nor feeling; everything is moral and material dirtiness! And the theatrical crisis is strong. Oh the beautiful days passed!... "Mi sento vecchio! Anche la voglia di lavorare non l'ho più!Speriamo che sia un periodo transitorio.Torre de Lago e anche la mia Italia come è ora dopo guerra mi fa un poco shifo! Not it is more education - sentiment - all southern moral and material! E la crisi teatrale è forte anche qui. Oh i bei tempi passati!"...
