RAVEL Maurice (1875 - 1937) - Lot 172
RAVEL Maurice (1875 - 1937) L.A.S. "Maurice Ravel", [Châlons-sur-Marne] September 24, 1916, to his friend Lucien GARBAN; 3 1/2 pages in-8, envelope. Letter from the hospital, full of humor. "But no, rest assured, my dear friend; they will not take out all my guts. Only a small piece - I wasn't that heavy already... well -. The melon has something to do with it, but the diet I've been on for the last 6 months has a lot to do with it. They don't know yet when I will be operated. For the time being, I am being bandaged, so I am sweating. I am very well here - as well as one can be in a hospital. I read... everything. I have visitors all day. The nurse-major, assisted by her daughter, is my captain's sister. As for the ward nurse, she is a beautiful lady - she is at least one meter taller than I am - charming, full of concern, but she has an ugly face, and is over 55 years old. And then, on Sundays, military music in the courtyard. It is even the only entertainment in Châlons. We owe it to brave R.A.T. volunteers, full of good intentions. Only... they attacked the "prelude of Messidor" [of Alfred Bruneau]... On this, a Taube dropped a bomb. (Others say it was a Frenchman). Anyway, it was always shot. And, quite excited, the R.A.T. brilliantly executed the March Lorraine without almost cuckolding. What excites my interest the most is the convalescence period. I knew last night, through Durand, that you had accepted to transcribe my Trio. I am delighted [...] You should try to make at least a general sketch of it. During my stay in Paris, we could see that". He evokes a revolution among the maids of his mother... He is told that "the little party [his operation] would take place on Saturday"... The integral, n° 901.
