SAINT-SAËNS Camille (1835 - 1921) - Lot 189
SAINT-SAËNS Camille (1835 - 1921) L.A.S. "C. Saint-Saëns", Paris 16 March 1880, to a critic; 5 pages in-8. About Léo Delibes. He replies to an article of his correspondent, who commented on his own devoted to Jean de Nivelle. He is astonished: "It seemed to you that I had found the orchestration of my colleague and friend DELIBES unclear. I do not remember having said anything similar, on the contrary, it seemed to me to have made the greatest praise of it, and to have ended with this word which did not seem to me to lend itself to the least equivocation: "It is the perfection"". Perhaps he was mistaken: "That's what it is [...] to be involved in writing newspaper articles when you are a musician". He insists: he finds in this orchestration "all the qualities, including clarity". He notes a sentence in his correspondent's article: "For me, who learned music for my own misfortune and perhaps for that of others, I cannot be surprised by a modulation that does not alter a rhythm, having always believed that the function of modulations was only to alter the tonalities"... Attached is a L.A.S., Lisbon, November 12, 1880 (2 p. in-8) : "Please believe that in the future, when it will be possible for me, I will always be happy to go and lend you my assistance, and that I am very grateful for the desire you have expressed to see me in Liverpool"...
