SAINT-SAËNS Camille (1835 - 1921) - Lot 194
SAINT-SAËNS Camille (1835 - 1921) L.A.S. "C. Saint-Saëns", Island of Poulo-Condor (Cochinchina) April 3, 1895, to his "dear Antigone" [Julia BARTET]; 4 pages in-8. Beautiful letter to the actress. [Julia BARTET (1854-1941) had played Antigone, in the adaptation of Sophocles' play by Paul Meurice and Auguste Vacquerie, premiered on October 9, 1893 at the Comédie Française, with incidental music by Saint-Saëns] Antigone's letter of December 24 has made a long journey. He hopes that during all this time his son's health has recovered: "I have had a very unflourishing youth, one has despaired of my existence even more than once and little man still lives; you see that one must have confidence". He saw in the museum of Narbonne "a portrait of Mignard representing a young woman, the coat fleurdelysé on the shoulder, which resembles you trait for trait. [...] It is some royal princess, whom you have among your ancestors. [...] For me there is no doubt, you have royal blood in your veins"... He will go to see her as soon as he returns to Paris: "We will talk about this poor Vacquerie whose loss must have been very sensitive to you and to me. So much kindness and spirit rarely go together"... We join a L.A.S. "C. St S" to the same, Saint-Germain en Laye August 7 (1 p. in-8, mourning). His letter found him in Dieppe; he is leaving for the south and will return only at the end of the month. They will meet again "when we take Antigone back".
