STRAUSS Johann II (1825 - 1899) - Lot 215
STRAUSS Johann II (1825 - 1899) 3 L.A.S. "Johann Strauss", [1891-1892], to his publisher Fritz SIMROCK; 4 pages in-8 each; in German. Interesting letters to his publisher about his comic opera Ritter Pázmán, and the competition with Mascagni's L'Amico Fritz (Ritter Pázmán was premiered in Vienna on January 1, 1892, before being performed in Prague and Berlin). Wednesday. The performance is announced for December 29. He is besieged by the conductors of the military orchestras (Militairkapellmeistern); but he will not give anything before the premiere. Simrock must have been overwhelmed by requests for dance music. The management does more publicity than necessary. Strauss wishes the publisher the best possible dealings with his work. He received a visit from Perfall (the intendant of Munich) who wants the Munich theater to be the first to perform after Vienna, without knowing either the libretto or the music. BRAHMS is now at Meiningen; Strauss will dedicate him a waltz of his own composition, a popular but still spicy and peppery waltz: "Brahms muß mit einer Dedication, einem Walzer meiner Composition beschattet werden. Ich will diesen Walzer populär aber dennoch gewürzt u. gepfeff ert ohne Einbußen des Zweckes eines Walzer haltend auf einem Simrock'schen Präsentirteller seiner Zeit, (da ich momentan nicht in der Lage bin, solche beabsichtigende etwas aussergewöhnliche Art des Projectes eff ectuiren zu können) ihm unterbreiten..." [Prague Monday]. 3 hours of piano rehearsal with soloists and choir, followed by a diplomatic dinner and supper at the home of an influential family in Prague. It is 3 o'clock in the morning. The tempi were exactly respected. The bass and tenor are excellent, as well as the chorus: the tempi deviate enormously from those of the Vienna operas, which are sometimes noticeably exhausted ("Die Tempi hier divergiren gewaltig mit den in den Wien Opern hin hie und da empfi ndlich vergriff enen"); he is therefore pleased. The 4 drinking songs (Trinklieder) are kept. A change has been made in the 3rd act. The stage rehearsals start tomorrow... Tuesday. The first stage rehearsal with orchestra will be on Friday - and so on until the 20th. The dress rehearsal will take place on the 21st. Strauss will attend all rehearsals. In order to shorten the work, he intends to delete the trio of the third act.... Then he speaks about L'Amico Fritz by MASCAGNI which is the great success in fashion, without having been represented yet; but the reductions for piano are everywhere. He does not deny that Mascagni has a great talent, but nothing original: "Daß Mascagni ein grosses Talent - stelle ich nicht in Abrede - aber kein ursprüngliches"....
