STRAWINSKY Igor (1882 - 1971) - Lot 227
STRAWINSKY Igor (1882 - 1971) 2 L.A.S., 1937, to Mrs. Dagmar GODOWSKY in New York; 2 and 4 pages in-8, envelope with name crossed out. Beautiful letters to her friend the actress. [Dagmar GODOWSKY (1897-1975), daughter of the pianist Leopold Godowsky, was one of the stars of the silent movies] Sancellemoz September 30. He apologizes for not having answered his good letters: "I am a very bad correspondent"; but he has just spent two very difficult months near Geneva with his family: "my wife, who fell ill in June, could not get rid of this new attack of tuberculosis and here she is again in the sanatorium of Sancellemoz for months. That's cheerful!"... He returns from Venice where he directed "Jeu de cartes au concert - with great success"... He is surprised not to have any answer from CHAPLIN whom he had met during his stay in America, "neither to my letter nor to Speiser's. Innoui!"... He will be the next two months on concert trips (London, Amsterdam, Switzerland, Naples, Bucharest, etc.)... Paris December 29. Wishes for the New Year; he has been very worried about his wife's health: "I have been very afraid these last months that her relapse would take serious forms". Fortunately, the excellent doctors who follow her have been reassuring for some time: "I want to believe and I hope; their optimism encourages me. I have been traveling all this time: a series of concerts in England, Holland, Italy and the Baltic countries. [...] This is the reason for my long silence. Besides, everyone knows that I have always been a very bad correspondent"... He is doing well and has resumed, after these trips, his work of composition: "a concerto für Kammerorchester, the first performance of which is booked by Mrs. Bliss of Washington. Nadia BOULANGER who is going to America in a month will conduct this composition at her home there with the "Histoire du Soldat" and Doushkin will take part in this private evening (playing in the "Soldat" and also some small pieces of mine). All this in May". It was through Nadia Boulanger that he came into contact with the violinist Samuel DUSHKIN [the great American violinist], to whom he wrote "that I was in talks with Copley for the next season but that I was only charging Copley with symphonic engagements as I could no longer participate in these joint-concerts because it was doing more harm than good to Dushkin himself as a soloist (as it was me that the public came to see)", and also because these concerts were not paying enough... Since then, no news from Dushkin, he hopes he is not offended... It is very likely that he will come to America next year, "if Copley arranges a good symphonic season for me with a good commitment to NBC, which for the moment keeps a dull silence as far as I am concerned (like Hollywood)". However, he does not lose hope of seeing her again "and renewing our good meals at Marusi's and drinking that black wine from California again"...
