TCHAIKOVSKY PIOTR ILITCH (1840-1893) L.A.S.... - Lot 233 - Aguttes
TCHAIKOVSKY PIOTR ILITCH (1840-1893) L.A.S. "P. Tchaikovsky", Moscow 26 March [1884], to Eduard NAPRAVNIK; 3 1/2 pages in-8 in his cipher (cracks); in russian. Beautiful letter about his opera Mazeppa (premiered February 15, 1884 at the Bolshoi in Moscow). [Eduard NÁPRAVNIK (1839-1916), of Czech origin, was for many years the conductor of the Mariinsky Theater in St. Petersburg, as well as of the concerts of the Russian Musical Society, and a close friend of Tchaikovsky, whose works he premiered] He has just finished 3 amendments to Mazeppa, which he gave to Jurgenson, to be copied immediately and sent to Napravnik. These changes are as follows: 1) At the end of the first scene of Act I, after Mazeppa's words "you men, on horseback", he made the ending shorter in E major, so as not to complicate the scene, which suffers here from an overabundance of music. The chorus and soloists will only need to relearn a shorter phrase. 2) In Act II, Scene 2, he made a large cut in the scene with Mazeppa and Mariya. 3) In the last number of Act II, he extended the lullaby somewhat and concluded the opera with it. He hopes that Napravnik will be satisfied with these changes. As for the drunken Cossack, he assures that with a good interpretation the scene will not seem out of place; in any case he would not want to change anything in it: the whole number came out at once, and nothing worthwhile will come of starting to cut it and change it. Soon he will go to the country, to Kamenka. Original Russian text (and English translation): www.en.tchaikovsky-research. net/pages/Letter_2458
